For years, magazines have been using airbrushing techniques and Photoshop to remove what they deem to be “imperfections” from images of models and celebrities. One notorious instance was when British Vogue went so far as to controversially remove Cindy Crawford’s trademark mole in her first ever appearance on its cover. More recently, though, Photoshopping has often gone further than simply removing a mole.
As you can see in these before and after photos of Greek singer Despina Vandi, her torso and legs have been slimmed, her skin has been lightened and smoothed – even her hair has been made fuller for the cover of French magazine Nitro. Read on for 15 more stark Photoshop transformations that need to be seen to be believed.
15. Kris Jenner
During promotion for her cookery book in October 2014, Kris Jenner posted a photo to Instagram thanking chef Gordon Ramsay for his support. Ramsay himself posted a similar shot, only in this version, the pair’s natural wrinkles and creases were far more obvious.
14. Kristen Stewart
Sometimes Photoshop can make very subtle changes. Removing dark circles and smoothing complexions wouldn’t be noticeable without the original for comparison. Here, however, Kristen Stewart got a complete change of eye color.
13. Angelina Jolie
When posting a no-makeup selfie on Facebook, Angelina Jolie said, “Beneath the makeup and behind the smile, I am just a regular person… Behind the looks there are a lot of designers, make-up artists, and Photoshop editing.” Here’s some of that Photoshop editing at work.
12. Kim Kardashian
Perhaps most famous “Photoshopee” is Kim Kardashian. On numerous occasions, the internet sensation has been accused of altering her Instagram photos. Though she claims to have had only cellulite removed for Complex magazine, the image on the right shows a significantly more slender tummy area.
11. Megan Fox
Not even acclaimed beauty Megan Fox is safe from the Photoshop airbrush. Here you can see a smoothed-out, tanned complexion and deeper blue eyes. It’s a shame Photoshop doesn’t work in real life – in 2012, Grazia made light work of removing one of Fox’s tattoos, while in real life, the star had to undergo laser treatment to have a tattoo removed.
10. Penélope Cruz
Although Spanish actress Penélope Cruz has spoken against the use of Photoshop for retouching photos, it hasn’t stopped editors from manipulating her image. In this photo, dark shadows have been removed from below her eyes and laughter lines have been smoothed out.
9. Emma Watson
It’s not only older women who are Photoshopped. With altered hair color, bigger, more made-up eyes, paler skin and chiseled cheekbones, Emma Watson doesn’t actually look real any more here. On other occasions, Watson herself has publicly thanked photographers for not airbrushing so much as a freckle.
Blonder, tidier hair, a brighter, smoother complexion, trimmer waist and fuller bust – here, Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie gets the works. At least she still looks like Fergie. In February 2015, fans accused Allure magazine of Photoshopping the singer beyond recognition.
7. Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence is one of few celebrity advocates of Photoshop. In reference to a March 2013 Dior ad, she proclaimed, “That doesn’t look like me at all! I love Photoshop more than anything in the world.” It is perhaps the easiest way to achieve a dramatically more slender figure, as Lawrence does here.
6. Julianne Moore
As well as taking inches off the hips, Photoshop can take years off the face. Here, actress Julianne Moore looks younger with whitened teeth and reduced laughter lines. Moore told Redbook in 2014, “I want people to look natural… But I don’t like when magazines show pictures of someone looking terrible.”
5. Kate Moss
Kate Moss went un-Photoshopped in Italian Vogue in January 2015, with photographer Peter Lindberg capturing the supermodel at her most natural. Here, though, shadows and lines have obviously been removed, resulting in a much smoother and younger-looking complexion.
4. Naomi Watts
Photoshop can make its subjects look like entirely new people. Here, actress Naomi Watts has received every imaginable treatment. Brighter eyes, lighter complexion, blonder hair, decreased shadows, removed freckles, reduced shine on her skin… nothing has been left untouched.
3. Pamela Anderson
Having first posed nude for Playboy in 1989, Pamela Anderson will strip off again for the magazine’s last ever nude issue in January 2016. Some editors don’t like celebrities appearing too au naturel, however, and here have completely altered Pammy’s complexion.
2. Sharon Stone
Sharon Stone recently revealed all in Harpers Bazaar and said, “I’m aware that my ass looks like a bag of flapjacks. But I’m not trying to be the best-looking broad in the world.” Here, the Photoshop artist has probably gone a bit too far, giving the 57-year-old a fuller bust and younger complexion.
1. Tina Fey
In her book Bossypants, comedian Tina Fey said, “As long as we all know [Photoshopping is] fake, it’s no more dangerous to society than a radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds.” Here, Fey has been subjected to some harmless color enhancing and even a little scar smoothing.
